# Eat more on weekends – and still lose weight

This is exactly what Weekfuel is built for: leaner weekdays, more relaxed weekends – and a week that stays in a deficit.

**In short:** You can eat more on weekends and still lose weight if you split your **weekly budget** accordingly. **Formula:** weekday target = (weekly budget − weekend days × weekend target) ÷ 5. With 14,000 calories a week and 2,500 on Saturday and Sunday, you have 1,800 for Monday to Friday.

## The math

1. Set your weekly budget, e.g. 14,000 calories with the [calorie deficit calculator](https://weekfuel.app/en/calorie-deficit-calculator/).
2. Choose a weekend target: how much do you want on Saturday and Sunday? Say 2,500 each.
3. Subtract the weekend: 14,000 − 2 × 2,500 = 9,000 calories.
4. Split across weekdays: 9,000 ÷ 5 = 1,800 calories per weekday.

*Example: 1,800 calories Monday to Friday, 2,500 each on the weekend – weekly budget 14,000.*

| | | kcal | Goal | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | Oatmeal, lentil salad, sheet-pan veggies | 1800 | 1800 | on budget |
| Tue | Yogurt and berries, chicken wrap, soup | 1800 | 1800 | on budget |
| Wed | Omelet, tofu rice bowl, salad | 1800 | 1800 | on budget |
| Thu | Whole-grain toast, tuna salad, chili | 1800 | 1800 | on budget |
| Fri | Granola, office lunch, light dinner | 1800 | 1800 | on budget |
| Sat | Brunch, coffee and cake, pizza | 2500 | 2500 | on budget |
| Sun | Breakfast, Sunday roast, soup | 2500 | 2500 | on budget |

## How big can the gap be?

A gap of 500 to 800 calories between weekday and weekend day is manageable for most people. Much bigger and weekdays start to feel like deprivation. Then it's often better to choose a slightly smaller deficit or make only one weekend day bigger.

## Tips for easy weekdays

- **Protein first:** protein-rich meals keep you full longer. More in [weekly protein](https://weekfuel.app/en/guide/weekly-protein/).
- **Volume, not restriction:** vegetables, soups and fruit fill the plate for few calories.
- **Mind your drinks:** skipping soda and alcohol on weekdays often covers half the gap.
- **Walk more:** a few thousand extra steps a day noticeably grow your weekly deficit. See [steps per week](https://weekfuel.app/en/guide/steps-per-week/).

## Tips for the weekend

- **Don't “save up” all day:** starving until dinner usually means eating more than planned.
- **Rough logging is fine:** an AI photo of your restaurant plate beats nothing.
- **No Monday punishment:** just carry on. Monday's scale is often water, not fat ([here's why](https://weekfuel.app/en/guide/weigh-more-after-weekend/)).

## Frequently asked questions

### How many calories can I eat on the weekend?

Whatever your weekly budget leaves after the weekdays. Weekly budget minus weekdays, divided by the weekend days.

### Is it bad to eat less on weekdays?

Not as long as weekdays don't get too low. Stay above roughly 1,200 calories and get enough protein.

### What if the weekend ends up bigger than planned?

No problem. Balance the rest moderately over the next days or just call it a maintenance week. The [weekend calculator](https://weekfuel.app/en/weekend-calorie-calculator/) helps.
