# Why you weigh more after the weekend

Monday morning, the scale, a jolt. Relax: most of it will be gone in a day or two.

**In short:** After a weekend of eating more, you'll often weigh **1–2 kg (2–4 lb) more**. That's almost always **water**, not fat: salt and extra carbs make your body hold fluid, plus there's food in your digestive tract. After two to four normal days, most of it is usually gone.

## The three main reasons

### blue} Glycogen and water

Your body stores carbs as glycogen, and each gram binds about three grams of water. More pasta and pizza means more water.

### ember} Salt

Restaurant food and snacks are often salty. Your body holds more water until the salt balance settles.

### rose} Food in transit

A big Sunday dinner is still partly in your gut on Monday morning – and it has weight.

## Fat or water? Do the math

To gain a pound of fat you'd need roughly 3,500 calories above your normal burn (7,700 per kg). That's about four extra pizzas in one weekend. If you're 3 lb up on Monday, realistically only a small part of that is fat.

## How to read your scale

- **Trend over single readings:** a smoothed line over several days shows the real direction. That's exactly what the [weight trend in Weekfuel](https://weekfuel.app/en/weight-trend/) does.
- **Same conditions:** morning, after the bathroom, before breakfast.
- **Don't overrate Mondays:** compare week to week, for example the weekly average.

## What you can do

1. Eat normally and drink enough water.
2. Go easy on salt and heavily processed food for a few days.
3. Move – a walk helps, punishment workouts don't.
4. Check again after three or four days.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does weekend water weight last?

Usually two to four days of normal eating.

### Should I skip weighing on Mondays?

You can weigh in, just don't overrate the number. Several weigh-ins a week give a better trend.

### So weekends don't matter?

They do. Water goes away; a real surplus stays. That's why the [weekly budget](https://weekfuel.app/en/weekly-budget/) is worth watching.
