Weekly budget vs daily calorie counting

Both can work. The difference is how well they fit your life.

Count calories per week or per day? A fair comparison of a weekly budget and a daily limit: energy balance, everyday life, pros and cons.

In short

With the same total deficit, a weekly budget and a daily calorie limit lead to the same result on paper. A daily limit offers more structure; a weekly budget offers more flexibility for weekends, parties and irregular days.

What research says

Weight change follows energy balance over longer periods (Hall et al., 2011). Studies on intermittent energy restriction – lighter and heavier days – found similar short-term weight loss to continuous restriction, though long-term data is limited. An analysis of weight-loss app data (JMIR mHealth, 2018) also found that successful users had more consistent weekends or ate a bit less on Mondays than on weekends – in other words, they balanced across the week.

Frequently asked questions

Does counting calories weekly make sense scientifically?

Energy balance plays out over longer periods, so looking at the week is physiologically sound. What matters is that the total deficit is right.

Can I just eat the same every day in Weekfuel?

Of course. The weekly budget doesn't force anything. If every day looks the same, every day is green.
